In order to prevent the increasing loss of eyesight and prevent further eye diseases, the only option is to replace the old (original) lens with an artificial one. Without surgery, the progression of the disease will continue and can lead to blindness. This routine procedure is one of the most frequently performed types of eye surgery which is both safe and has low risk of complications.
BEFORE THE OPERATION
It is important to have a detailed examination before the procedure. An assessment is made of the stage of the disease, its influence on your vision and the possibility of other existing eye diseases. We determine precisely which lens is the most appropriate one for the maximum improvement of your vision. In recent years , the methods of correcting virtually any visual defect by customizing the lens have greatly developed and we are able to provide you with a solution to the problem with your vision through the use of a monofocal lens for distance , a multifocal lens (for close-up and distance) and also a varifocal or trifocal lens(for all distances). A corneal curvature can also be compensated. We will explain the advantages and disadvantages in detail in a consultation.
OPERATION
The procedure takes about 15 minutes.:
- the eye is locally anaesthetised with a drop of anaesthetic, so you will only feel a slight pressure but no pain.
- Access to your current lens is created witha small cut of approximately 2mm.
- Your current lens is ultrasonically dissolved and aspirated in several steps.
- The new rolled-up lens is inserted through a cannula, unfolds itself and is optimally positioned.
- The procedure is over and you can leave the clinic after about an hour.

AFTER THE OPERATION
The next day we carry out a check -up. You must continue to use eye drops which we provide as a matter of course. Due to the normal sensitivity to light, we recommend that you wear sunglasses after the procedure.Further immediate follow-up appointments are usually not necessary, but can be provided individually by the ophthalmologist. We recommend and offer a follow-up check about a month later.
Generally, both eyes are not operated on at the same time. The 2nd eye is treated 2-3 days after the first eye. If you don't live in Mallorca then you need to plan to be here for a full week for the treatment.
In the first 24 hours, your eyesight is still affected by the necessary enlargement of the pupil. In the first few days after the operation there are occasional astigmatisms which however diminish rapidly. Our claim is that you will see much better than you did before the procedure and in the shortest possible time
RISKS AND LIMITATIONS
Nowadays with modern phacoemulsification (cataract removal by ultrasound) and high-quality lenses there are few limitations. Of course, the eye must be healthy to regain 100 % vision. An existing eye disease, however, is not a contraindication, but may affect the outcome. Once the cataract progresses, there is no alternative to surgery.
The risks are kept as small as possible by an experienced team that performs the procedure several times a day using proven technology. Please note however, that any intervention inside the eye poses a risk. We are capable of solving any complications satisfactorily.
